Alcohol abuse means having unhealthy or dangerous drinking habits, such as drinking every day or drinking too much at a time. Alcohol abuse can harm one’s relationships, causing missed work, and lead to legal problems such as driving while drunk (intoxicated). When people abuse alcohol, they continue to drink even though they know their drinking is causing problems.

The cause of alcohol use disorder is still unknown. Alcohol use disorder develops when you drink so much that chemical changes in the brain occur. These changes increase the pleasurable feelings you get when you drink alcohol. This makes you want to drink more often, even if it causes harm.
